The Prahran Market is widely considered Melbourne’s best fresh food market and is Australia’s oldest and longest running market. The market has existed on its present site in Commercial Road for over 125 years. The original façade constructed in 1891 is listed on the National Trust of Australia and the Victoria Heritage Database, with that in mind any works on adjoining buildings must be carefully designed to complement the original façade, but at the same time have a visual impact on the vibrant Commercial Road.
Stokes Rousseau was engaged by the Prahran Market Board to bring some life and colour to the existing concrete façade and market entrances. Building works on the boundary of one of the busiest streets in Melbourne meant working closely with Vicroads, Yarra Trams, Transdev, PTV and local council to minimise interruption to public transport, traffic and pedestrian flow. Stripped back to its bare bones new concrete, structural steel, roofing, cladding, windows, louvered roof, and bespoke vertical lift steel windows created a new market façade, outdoor dining area and market entrances for many years to come.
