Prahran Market, VIC

The Prahran Market is widely considered Melbournes best fresh food market and is Australia’s oldest and longest running market.

150 years ago Prahran was famous for its small farms and market gardens, locally grown goods were sold or bartered and often carted into Melbourne. Due to the growing success of farmers the Prahran Council organised a central marketplace for trade, but it wasn’t until 1891 that the Prahran Market officially opened. The Market has seen many changes over its 150 year history, but has continued to flourish and is a special part of Melbourne’s History.

Stokes Rousseau, working alongside construction management firm Johnstaff has been engaged to manage the replacement of the fruit and vegetable hall floor. Responsibilities include the relocation of the 40 traders out of the market (in one day) and back in again upon completion. Communication and coordination with each trader, and their design team to manage internal fitouts and service co-ordination to each tenancy. Stokes Rousseau will also manage the construction of the architecturally designed shopfronts and display kitchens, which will sure to be the talking point of the new hall.

Once Completed the works will ensure that the market survives another 150 years into the future.
