Industrial CoolingDam Remediation

Remediating a critical cooling asset without interrupting the facility it serves.

Explore the project

One critical asset. Three delivery roles. A live industrial site.

Stokes Rousseau was engaged to manage the remediation and replacement of an industrial cooling dam at a large operating facility. The project extended from early civil works and design management through major dam construction and delivery of the new pumphouse.

Replace the cooling system while the facility kept operating.

The programme combined heavy civil works, controlled dredging and live-service coordination in an environmentally sensitive work zone.

Maintain operations

The cooling asset had to be replaced in coordination with an operating rendering facility, requiring careful staging around production, access and critical services.

Control water and material

Surface water run-off, dam decommissioning and the removal of silt and biosolids all had to be managed under strict environmental controls.

Advance two workstreams

Early civil works proceeded to a tight programme while Stokes Rousseau simultaneously led the design team through development of the new dam solution.

Lead the programme from enabling works to commissioning.

Stokes Rousseau gave the client one point of coordination across design management, superintendent services and direct principal-contractor delivery.

Prepare the site first

Early civil works established heavy-haulage access and the surface-water controls needed for the main remediation programme.

Decommission under control

The existing dam and pumphouse were taken out of service before dredging removed accumulated silt and biosolids through a carefully managed environmental process.

Coordinate specialist delivery

Stokes Rousseau acted as Superintendent for the major civil package and as Principal Contractor for the new pumphouse, aligning both streams with the live facility.

A larger, integrated cooling system delivered inside a live facility.

The completed works provide a larger HDPE-lined dam, new civil infrastructure and a purpose-built pumphouse incorporating extensive electrical and hydraulic services, pumps and floating equipment. Delivery remained coordinated with the facility's ongoing operations throughout.
