Stokes Rousseau was engaged to undertake a multi-stage restoration of the historic Trial Bay Gaol, located within Arakoon National Park in New South Wales.
Stokes Rousseau was engaged to undertake a multi-stage restoration of the historic Trial Bay Gaol, located within Arakoon National Park in New South Wales.
Originally opened as a prison in 1886 and later used as a German internment camp during World War I, the site was closed in 1918 and has since become a significant tourist attraction and cultural landmark.
The restoration works focused on conserving the structure’s historical integrity while addressing material degradation caused by age and environmental exposure. Scope included repointing the entrance gatehouse and surrounding walls, replacing damaged glazing bricks with new double-hung sash windows, installing copper stormwater services, and carrying out specialist salt-damage remediation. This included the stripping and replacement of internal render following a poultice treatment process to draw out embedded salts.
