University of Melbourne – Performing Arts Building
University of Melbourne
Project overview
Project context and scope.
Nestled in the heart of Melbourne’s Performing Arts Precinct, the University of Melbourne’s Southbank campus offers world-class facilities and a uniquely immersive, industry-focused experience to students and staff alike.
Stokes Rousseau was engaged with a focus on Building 864, the three-storey Performing Arts Building consisting of five purpose-built dance studios and a range of theatre and performance spaces. Delivered across seven stages within a live operational environment, the works were carefully sequenced so students could continue to use the building through full occupation, with noise and dust rigorously managed throughout.
The scope of works involved major structural changes alongside a series of facility, accessibility and infrastructure upgrades throughout Building 864. Works included the replacement of dance floors in Studios 201, 202, 221, 301 and 302, new amenities and change rooms, dedicated staff facilities, a new storage and Green Room, and audiovisual upgrades to all dance studios.
The project also improved accessibility through the installation of a new lift and link bridge from St Kilda Road, upgrades to internal stairs, and DDA-compliant access improvements, including a reconfigured entry to Studio 221. Seating upgrades, door replacements and the refurbishment of Level 1 facilities – including offices, meeting room access, a kitchenette, staff shower and laundry – completed the project.
Stokes Rousseau’s coordinated approach to complex structural, accessibility, infrastructure and performance facility upgrades was instrumental in delivering a modern, inclusive and adaptable campus that enhances the experience of students, staff and visitors alike.
